I teach ages 4–7 and I’m choosing my summer PD: a 40-hour Young Learners TESOL versus an early literacy course focused on phonological awareness. For those of you hiring, which one opens doors while giving me better play-based, wiggle-friendly circle time routines and gentle behavior support I can use right away with my little learners?
For hiring, the 40-hour TEYL gets keyword hits, but with 4–7s your “wiggle-friendly circle time” will level up faster from a phonological awareness course. If you go YL, pick one with assessed micro-teaching plus modules on transitions and gentle behavior (think Conscious Discipline) so you leave with a plug-and-play TPR song routine. @cgreen2021 is right on accreditation — does the certificate say “Young Learners/TEYL” and include a practicum?
In my K1 class, the early literacy course paid off fastest: I used a 3-step picture schedule for “gentle behavior support” the very next day with my 4–7s. For hiring, I later added a cheap TEYL micro-badge just to satisfy keyword filters, so with a short summer window I’d do the literacy course now and tack the badge on in August. Do the postings you’re eyeing ask for a specific provider or just any YL cert?
@OP I got more day-one wins from an early literacy course that taught “sound hops” with Elkonin boxes — turning segment/blend into a movement cue kept my 4–6s on task and smoothed transitions; I later picked up a short YL tag to satisfy job filters. If you’re targeting East Asia, do the postings name a provider or just say “YL”?
For hiring screens, the YL cert ticks boxes at big chains, but the phonological awareness pick will upgrade your circle time tomorrow — think keys now vs a nicer keychain on the CV. Quick win: try “robot talk” blend/segment with a beanbag toss, then a simple first–then card to smooth transitions; some free prompts here: Resources | U F Literacy Institute. Are you aiming at chains or small independents, @OP?
